Retro Handheld Chipset (SoC) Tier List
Anbernic and Retroid release a new handheld shell almost every month—but 95% of emulation performance is determined by the System-on-Chip (SoC) inside. Two handhelds with the same processor will run PS2 and GameCube at identical frame rates.
AMD Custom APU (Zen 2 / RDNA 2)
CPU: 4C/8T Zen 2 @ 3.5GHz • GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CUs @ 1.6GHz
Desktop-class x86 APU inside the Steam Deck OLED. Runs PCSX2, Dolphin, RPCS3, and Ryujinx natively on SteamOS without mobile ARM driver bottlenecks.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
CPU: 1x Cortex-X3 @ 3.2GHz + 4x A715/A710 + 3x A510 • GPU: Adreno 740 (Turnip Mesa Compatible)
The undisputed king of Android handheld emulation. Combined with custom Mesa Turnip drivers, Adreno 740 crushes PS2, GameCube, 3DS, and Nintendo Switch at 1080p 60 FPS without breaking a sweat.
Apple A17 Pro / A16 Bionic (iOS)
CPU: 6-Core (2 Performance @ 3.78GHz + 4 Efficiency) • GPU: Apple 6-Core GPU (Metal 3 API)
Raw silicon single-core speed is unmatched, making PPSSPP and Delta run at 4x resolution with zero frame drops. However, Apple App Store restrictions prevent JIT compilation by default, limiting official App Store PS2/GameCube emulation without sideloading.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 865
CPU: 1x Kryo 585 Prime @ 2.84GHz + 3x Gold + 4x Silver • GPU: Adreno 650 (Full Turnip Driver Support)
Featured in the Retroid Pocket 5 and Pocket Mini. Because it uses an Adreno 650 GPU instead of Mali, it unlocks custom Mesa Turnip drivers—giving it vastly superior Switch, 3DS, and Winlator compatibility compared to similarly priced MediaTek chips.
MediaTek Dimensity 1100
CPU: 4x Cortex-A78 @ 2.6GHz + 4x Cortex-A55 @ 2.0GHz • GPU: Mali-G77 MC9 (Vulkan 1.1)
A brute-force mid-range workhorse found in the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. Four big Cortex-A78 cores chew through 96% of the PS2 and GameCube catalog at 2x resolution, though its Mali GPU lacks custom Turnip drivers for heavy Switch titles.
Unisoc T820
CPU: 1x Cortex-A76 @ 2.7GHz + 3x A76 @ 2.3GHz + 4x A55 • GPU: Mali-G57 MP4 @ 850MHz
Anbernic’s go-to mid-tier processor (RG556, RG Cube, RG406V). Handles PSP, Dreamcast, N64, and 3DS effortlessly, and plays most GameCube and PS2 games smoothly—though extreme PS2 titles like Shadow of the Colossus or God of War II require mild underclocking.
Unisoc Tiger T618
CPU: 2x Cortex-A75 @ 2.0GHz + 6x Cortex-A55 @ 2.0GHz • GPU: Mali-G52 3EE 2-Core @ 850MHz
The classic mid-tier workhorse found in the CNC aluminum Anbernic RG405M, RG505, and Retroid Pocket 3+. Handles 100% of PSP, Dreamcast, Saturn, and N64 with ease. Can run lighter PS2 (Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts) and GameCube (Wind Waker) with GammaOS and PAL 50Hz ROMs, but chokes on God of War II or Shadow of the Colossus.
Rockchip RK3566 / Allwinner A133P
CPU: Quad-Core ARM Cortex-A55 @ 1.8GHz • GPU: Mali-G52 2EE / PowerVR GE8300
Popular budget Linux handheld silicon (Powkiddy RGB30, TrimUI Smart Pro). Great for PortMaster, PICO-8, SNES, GBA, PS1, N64, and lighter PSP games with frameskip, but completely incapable of PS2 or GameCube.
Allwinner H700 / ARM Cortex-A53 Budget Tier
CPU: Quad-Core ARM Cortex-A53 @ 1.5GHz • GPU: Dual-Core Mali-G31 MP2
Powers the viral $55-$69 Anbernic XX line (RG35XX SP, RG35XX Plus, RG40XX H). Flawless for 8-bit, 16-bit, GBA, and PS1 with CRT shaders, plus light N64/Dreamcast/PSP, but cannot run PS2, GameCube, or 3DS.
