Zero slowdown (Decompresses in RAM blocks on the fly)

.RVZ (Dolphin Native)

★ Mandatory for GameCube & Wii
Supported Systems:

Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Wii

Compatible Emulators:

Dolphin Emulator (Android, PC, Mac, Linux)

Space Savings:

50% - 75% space reduction

FPS & Latency Impact:

Faster loading than raw ISO on slow SD cards

.CSO (CISO Compressed)

Good, but uncompressed ISO or level 1 CSO preferred for high FPS
Supported Systems:

Sony PSP

Compatible Emulators:

PPSSPP (Android, iOS, PC, Linux)

Space Savings:

20% - 40% space reduction

FPS & Latency Impact:

Minor stutter on compression level 9 with heavy games like God of War

.PBP (PSX EBOOT)

Best for multi-disc PS1 RPGs (e.g. Final Fantasy VII)
Supported Systems:

Sony PlayStation 1

Compatible Emulators:

DuckStation, PCSX ReARMed, ePSXe

Space Savings:

30% - 50% space reduction

FPS & Latency Impact:

None

.NSP / .XCI (Compressed to .NSZ)

Great for cold storage on PC, keep raw on handheld
Supported Systems:

Nintendo Switch

Compatible Emulators:

Sudachi, Suyu, Ryujinx

Space Savings:

30% - 60% space reduction

FPS & Latency Impact:

Must be decompressed before running on some Android builds

Tutorial 1: PS2 & PS1 (CHD)

1-Click Batch Convert with CHDMAN

MAME's chdman.exe converts entire folders of PS2 ISOs or PS1 BIN/CUEs automatically in the background.

  1. Download chdman (included in MAME tools release).
  2. Place chdman.exe inside your folder of ISO files.
  3. Create a new text file named convert.bat with this script:
for %%i in (*.iso) do chdman createcd -i "%%i" -o "%%~ni.chd"
pause

Double-click convert.bat and let your CPU convert your entire library automatically.

Tutorial 2: GameCube & Wii (RVZ)

Dolphin Built-in RVZ Converter

Dolphin has the converter built right into the desktop GUI—no command line or separate software required!

  1. Open Dolphin Emulator on your PC.
  2. Right-click any GameCube or Wii game in your games list.
  3. Select Convert File...
  4. Format: Choose RVZ (Block Size: 128 KiB).
  5. Compression: Select Zstandard (Level 5).
  6. Click Convert.

Once finished, delete the old .iso and keep the new .rvz.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does compressing ISOs to CHD or RVZ reduce audio/video quality?

Absolutely not! Both CHD and RVZ use completely lossless compression algorithms (LZMA and Zstandard). When the emulator reads the game file, it decodes the exact original bitstream in RAM. There is zero compression artifacting, zero audio degradation, and zero frame-rate loss.

Q: Can NetherSX2 on Android read .CHD files directly?

Yes! Both NetherSX2 and AetherSX2 have native built-in CHD v5 support. You do not need to extract the files. Place your .chd files directly into your PS2 ROM folder and scan.

Q: Can Dolphin on Android read .RVZ files directly?

Yes, RVZ is Dolphin’s official custom container. It was created specifically by the Dolphin development team to replace old lossy WBFS and bloated uncompressed ISOs. It loads seamlessly on both Android and PC versions.

Q: How much space do I typically save on a 256GB or 512GB MicroSD card?

On an average 500-game retro library spanning PS1, PS2, and GameCube, converting all raw ISO and BIN/CUE dumps to CHD and RVZ frees up between 80 GB to 180 GB of MicroSD storage. That allows you to fit 40 to 90 additional games without buying a larger card!
