⚠️

The Linux Case-Sensitivity Trap

Windows treats SCPH5501.BIN and scph5501.bin identically, but Linux does not. If your retro handheld runs muOS, OnionOS, ArkOS, or Knulli, copying an uppercase file will cause the emulator to throw a "Missing BIOS" error.

Always rename all BIOS files to strict lowercase before copying them onto your microSD card.

📁

The Dreamcast Subfolder Rule

Unlike PS1 or GBA files which sit directly in the root of the BIOS folder, Sega Dreamcast emulators (Flycast & Redream) require a nested folder structure:

BIOS/dc/dc_boot.bin
BIOS/dc/dc_flash.bin

Placing dc_boot.bin directly inside /BIOS/ will cause games to freeze on a black screen.

Frequently Asked Questions: Handheld BIOS & Firmware Setup

Q:Why does my retro handheld say 'BIOS not found' even after copying the files?

The most common culprit is Linux case-sensitivity. On Linux custom firmwares (muOS, OnionOS, ArkOS, Knulli), filenames are strictly case-sensitive. If an emulator expects 'scph5501.bin' in all lowercase, a file named 'SCPH5501.BIN' or 'Scph5501.bin' will fail to load. Always verify lowercase naming and ensure Dreamcast files reside in a 'dc/' subdirectory.

Q:Does GameCube (Dolphin) or PSP (PPSSPP) require a BIOS file?

No. Both Dolphin and PPSSPP utilize High-Level Emulation (HLE) by default. They simulate the original console operating system functions directly in software with 99.9% accuracy. External BIOS files are optional and only needed for the authentic GameCube rolling cube startup animation or Japanese font rendering.

Q:Is my BIOS file uploaded to any server when using this verifier tool?

No. The verification is performed 100% locally inside your web browser using the native Web Cryptography API (crypto.subtle.digest). Your file never leaves your computer or phone, guaranteeing absolute privacy and zero bandwidth consumption.

Q:Which PS2 BIOS is recommended for NetherSX2 and PCSX2?

The SCPH-90001 (v2.30, USA) BIOS, typically named 'ps2-0230a-20080220.bin', is the most widely tested and stable BIOS release. It features the latest kernel revision from Sony's final PS2 hardware iteration, preventing clock drift and CDVD timing hangs.
